Now Running CyanogenMod 6.1 RC1 - with Kernel #15

If you are a frequenter of XDA Developers, you'll know what I mean by CyanogenMod. Cyanogen, who practically has legendary status already as an Android ROM modder has come up with a Android Froyo 2.2 version of his own, which includes some nice customizations and runs fast. It's also referred to as CM6.

Right now, the latest version is CM6.1 RC1.

Lastly, I'm using Overclock Widget (free) from the Market which the Screen-on settings of 556800/748800, and Screen-off settings of 245760/480000.

I was not so sure about how much I would hang on to this over the NFX Sense based 2.1 ROM, but so far, I've liked it a lot. Although I'm missing the HTC Camera/Album combination, I'm not missing anything else. One minor annoyance is that I get a voicemail icon on my status bar, even when I don't have any voicemail. But something I can live with. You should give this combo a try if you've rooted your Sprint Hero.

  1. Nice. I'm running cm6.0.0 on my heroC, waiting for the 6.1.0 stable release.

  2. @Leon, 6.1 RC1 seems stable enough for me. Before that, I was running the nightlies for 6.0. RC1 isn't any worse.

  4. Ron & Pam - Flashing a kernel is not hard at all.

Basically, a kernel is a zip file. A kernel is not necessarily specific to a certain ROM, but it may be. First of all, can you share what kind of ROM you use?

But essentially it goes like this:
    1. Place the kernel on your SD card, not inside any folder, but at the "root" level, again just meaning you just copied it on to the top level of the card ,not a folder. Don't unzip it.

    2. Boot into your recovery mode. You can do so by powering off, and then powering on with the home button held down when you power back on.

    3. Choose "flash zip file..." and then choose your kernel.

    4. Then again in the recovery mode, choose "Wipe > Wipe Dalvik Cache"

    5. Reboot.

Rebooting may take up to 5 mins after you clear your Dalvik cache.

    Hope this helps.
